Mapping the Euro-Mediterranean Cultural Economy
7th Mediterranean Social and Political Research Meeting
22-26 March 2006
This conference will explore aspects of the cultural economy in the Euro-Mediterranean area, in particular on its eastern and southern shores. It will seek to ‘map' the state of cultural enterprise across the region, that term being understood as a broad range of market-related cultural activities. It will thus explore cultural industries stricto sensu (many of which are rather more incipient than fully developed in this region) as well as artisanal endeavours in fields such as handicrafts, exploitation of the intangible heritage, artistic production, etc. The main focus will be on the political economy of these cultural enterprises large and small, including their relationship to the reconfigurations of the economy in a financialised and globalised world.

Les medias : entrepreneurs ou rapporteurs de la mondialisation ?
Laboratoire d'études sur les politiques publiques et la mondialisation (LEPPM)
11-13 May 2006
Media play a key role in our democracies. In fact, in a context where boundaries tend to disappear, media are at the center of the communication flows that characterize, to a large extent, globalization. But what is their exact role? Do media set the stage and have policy makers respond to what makes the news (CNN factor) or do policy makers set the agenda media report (indexing hypothesis)? Is their influence exercised on the decision makers or on the polity? Both explanations have their supporters, but, as of now, studies that have comparatively analyzed these hypotheses in different societies or in different issue areas are scarce

MARC 2006 - Suburban Developments of the Recent Past: Visions - Realities - Futures
3rd International Course on the Conservation of Modern Architecture
13 May – 9 June 2006
Rather than focusing on individual architectural masterpieces as previous courses have done, the international MARC 2006 course will concentrate on the conservation problems of everyday suburbs built in the 1960s and 1970s, including technical, landscape, and social aspects. At the conclusion of the course, participants will be able to identify values, recognize and evaluate ideas and contexts, and understand problems and solutions related to the urban, architectural, technical, material, and structural aspects of industrialized suburban housing developments of the recent past. Furthermore, participants will be able to better understand the essential elements of the decision-making process for conservation, and be able to develop arguments for the conservation of the modern built heritage, including the means to communicate them.

Cultural heritage and sustainable forest management: the role of traditional knowledge

Italian Academy of Forestry Science
8-10 June 2006
The great emphasis placed on sustainability in recent decades and efforts to integrate broader sustainability criteria into forest planning and management have led to the recognition that modern approaches to Sustainable Forest Management (SFM) cannot be developed without understanding the significance and the role of traditional cultures in shaping today's forests. Traditional knowledge has greatly contributed and still does to the world's natural and cultural heritage, not only by creating and maintaining landscapes with outstanding aesthetic beauty, but also by helping to sustain production of multiple goods and services providing livelihoods security and quality of life. The conference is the first of a series of regional meetings to encourage/facilitate improved dialogue and information exchange among and between scientists, holders/users of traditional knowledge and related cultural landscapes, planners, managers and decision makers.
